چکیده

In the gametophyte of the fern Anem ia phyllitidis synthesis of linolenic acid esterified in monogalactosyldiglyceride requires light. By induction-reversion experiments it could be demon strated that this light-dependent step is mediated by phytochrome. There is also evidence for phytochrome control of galactolipid and hexadecatrienoic acid synthesis. In continuous blue light the synthesis of linolenic acid is inhibited and linoleic acid accumulates. It is concluded that the blue light photoreceptor affects an inhibition of linoleic acid desaturase. In continuous blue light chloroplasts contain abundant multilayered thylakoids, the grana regions are not as distinct as in white light, and membranes appear less appressed. In continuous red light the membranes are reduced in number and contain less grana-like appressions. It is concluded that both photorecep tors are necessary for a coordinate synthesis and assembly of the individual components of the chloroplast membrane.

Use of rbcL and trnL-F as a Two-Locus DNA Barcode for Identification of NW-European Ferns: An Ecological Perspective

Although consensus has now been reached on a general two-locus DNA barcode for land plants, the selected combination of markers (rbcL + matK) is not applicable for ferns at the moment. Yet especially for ferns, DNA barcoding is potentially of great value since fern gametophytes--while playing an essential role in fern colonization and reproduction--generally lack the morphological complexity fo...

Chloroplast and nuclear photorelocation movements

Chloroplasts move toward weak light to increase photosynthetic efficiency, and migrate away from strong light to protect chloroplasts from photodamage and eventual cell death. These chloroplast behaviors were first observed more than 100 years ago, but the underlying mechanism has only recently been identified. Ideal plant materials, such as fern gametophytes for photobiological and cell biolog...

Life cycle matters: DNA barcoding reveals contrasting community structure between fern sporophytes and gametophytes

Ferns are the only major lineage of vascular plants that have nutritionally independent sporophyte (diploid) and gametophyte (haploid) life stages. However, the implications of this unique life cycle for fern community ecology have rarely been considered. To compare patterns of community structure between fern sporophytes and gametophytes, we conducted a survey of the ferns of the islands of Mo...

On the widespread capacity for, and functional significance of, extreme inbreeding in ferns.

Homosporous vascular plants utilize three different mating systems, one of which, gametophytic selfing, is an extreme form of inbreeding only possible in homosporous groups. This mating system results in complete homozygosity in all progeny and has important evolutionary and ecological implications. Ferns are the largest group of homosporous land plants, and the significance of extreme inbreedi...

Jasmonic acid induces changes in growth and polypeptide composition of fern gametophytes

We studied morphology of gametophytes of the fern Platycerium bifurcation 20 to 45 days after spore sowing. In addition, we examined the effects of 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 or 100 pM jasmonic acid (JA) on their growth and polypeptide composition. Gametophytes cultured for 20 days on modified Knop’s medium were oblong to round in outline. 3-5 rhizoids ap peared mainly on the basal cell and 2-3 unicellu...
